Max Baillie & ZRI meet Charlie Chaplin
On Friday 9 August the remarkable Max Baillie brings another concert to town as part of his ongoing Saint Leonards concerts program. Laurie Temple urges you to book your tickets now for a guaranteed film and musical treat for all the family.
There is always a buzz when the magnificent and versatile violinist, Max Baillie, brings music to his home town. This time, he will be playing with one of his ensembles, the equally remarkable ZRI band.
Together, they will play a live score to Charlie Chaplin’s comedy film, The Adventurer, made in 1917.
If you have not heard ZRI before, then you are in for a treat!
ZRI stands for Zum Roten Igel, Or ‘To the Red Hedgehog’, the Tavern in 19th-century Vienna, where Schubert and Brahms each went to hear gypsy and folk music, beginning with the radical re-scoring of the Brahms clarinet quintet, to include accordion, and santouri (dulcimer). ZRI has developed equally captivating programs which reimagine Schubert‘s great C-major quintet, waltzes with Schoenburg, and this adventure with Charlie Chaplin, which has already been a great success. The group has performed at major festivals across the UK and abroad, to critical acclaim.
Charlie Chaplin has been an idol of mine since I was a kid and inspired me to go into comedy entertainment myself! The thought of seeing this film with ZRI playing the soundtrack, is very exciting, and certainly an event not to be missed!
The concert is a family-friendly program and children of 12 and under are invited free of charge.
The concert takes place on Friday 9 August at 7.30pm at St John’s, the Evangelist church at the junction of Brittany Road and Pevensey Road, Saint Leonards TN38 0RD.
Max’s concert are very well attended, so it would be advisable to book up quickly, via the Saint Leonards concert website; www.STLCONCERTS.co.uk. Ticket prices range from £5–25 – the lower priced tickets aim to help those with financial difficulties.
