‘I chained myself to an oak tree to save it – and I’ll do it again if Southern Housing tree-fellers return’

Retired social worker Heather Lawrence took drastic action when tree fellers employed by Southern Housing threatened three ancient oaks outside her home, chaining herself to one of the trees. Katy Weitz reports on ructions at the village of Broad Oak, near Brede, in Rother.

No motion to debate, but HBC finally takes action on Gaza

A letter calling on the prime minister to take “decisive action” to support the people of Gaza has been prepared by Hastings Borough Council as an alternative to including a motion in similar vein on the agenda of Wednesday’s Full Council meeting. Meanwhile a protest was held outside the council offices in the belief that Gaza would be ignored during the evening’s proceedings. Nick Terdre reports.

Gathering commemorates Ukraine’s great tragedy, the Holodomor

The Ukrainian and British communities came out in force at the weekend to support a collective remembering of the Holodomor, the catastrophic famine imposed on the Ukrainian people by Stalin’s regime in the early 1930s, and one of the worst crimes against humanity ever committed, says Krysta Rafalska, who describes the gathering.

Hastings Jews for Justice take their case to MP Helena Dollimore

While the carnage in Gaza continues, Hastings Jews for Justice continue to press for the human rights of Palestinians to be respected, and for the UK government to fully assume its obligations under international and domestic laws which in their view it is failing to do. In a recent meeting with MP Helena Dollimore, they asked for her help in bringing their case to Parliament, as Felicity Laurence recounts.

Sparkly Christmas events to light up the Old Town
