Horse takes the road to Henry Ward Hall
Horse McDonald comes to Hastings on Saturday 30 November. Erica Smith sings the praises of this iconic singer songwriter.
Horse McDonald is a force to be reckoned with. Not only does she have a voice which balances power with sensitivity, but she has been an uncompromising LGBTQ+ champion since the late 1980s. Horse has shared stages with Tina Turner and BB King and now – thanks to her sister Diva, Sarah Jane Morris – she will be performing at Henry Ward Hall.
As well as performing classics like Careful, she will be playing songs from her latest album, The Road Less Travelled. A collection of 12 powerful songs packing a real punch, it runs the gamut of every emotion; from the raging banger Leaving, to the anthemic Super-power, to the exquisite and fragile beauty that is The Moon and I. Horse has poured her very soul into this album.
The title is a perfect fit for a performer who has always taken the path less travelled. As a queer teenager in Lanarkshire in the 70s, playing guitar and writing songs in her bedroom saved Horse from the homophobia of her hometown. More recently in lockdown, she began to fall apart again, and she turned her focus to writing music. Her music is her voice – and by using it – it has also become a conduit for those listening.
Horse will be joined by singer songwriter Kristen Adamson who is opening the show. Who can tell – maybe Sarah Jane Morris will also share the stage. Three icons for the price of one!
Horse is performing at the Henry Ward Hall in Cambridge Road on Saturday 30th November. Doors are at 7pm. You can buy your tickets in advance on Eventbrite.
