DIVEST! screening at Electric Palace on Sunday 8 December

Sophisticated jazz from Empirical at Jazz Hastings’ December gig

For their Tuesday 3 December session, Jazz Hastings is welcoming one of Europe’s top jazz ensembles. Founded in 2007, Empirical is “still a reliable touchstone of contemporary British jazz at its most sophisticated” (Jazzwise 2022). Julian Norridge explains why.

HBC backs Climate and Nature Bill

Hastings Borough Council has joined the growing ranks of supporters of the Climate and Nature Bill, which aims to oblige the government to produce a ‘joined up’ strategy for combating climate change and reversing the decline in nature. Action by the council is also called for. Nick Terdre reports.

Whelan’s Weaving pops up in Kings Road

The ‘Introduced…’ shop in Kings Road, St Leonards is a showcase for different craftspeople and artists to share their work in a commercial space. Last Wednesday, Claire Whelan set up her loom and she welcomes passers by to come in to watch her weave and maybe commission a Christmas scarf. Erica Smith dropped by to learn about the warp and the weft.

Snowy protest at County Hall calls for fossil fuel divestment

Residents of East Sussex and Brighton & Hove braved snow and near-zero temperatures on Thursday (21 November) to stage a 90-minute ‘Divest for climate justice!’ protest outside County Hall in Lewes. Divest East Sussex’s Gabriel Carlyle reports.
