Time To Stand And Stare – with Runway

“Come and take part in TIME TO STAND AND STARE”: an invitation issued by RUNWAY artists Roz Cran and Sharon Haward during the recent Coastal Currents Arts Festival. This was an art walk from Hastings Pier along the coast to De La Warr Pavilion in Bexhill on a beautiful sunny day in September. HOT asked Roz Cran to tell us more about the project.

Carry on regardless at Hastings Pier?

Breaches of planning consent on Hastings Pier have been known for many months.  Following coverage of this in HOT, there are four more big signs on the Deck building, there without permission. The Deck doors have new lettering over them, without permission. The inscription for the Birch Room has similarly been obliterated without permission.  For Bernard McGinley, this looks increasingly like a slight to Hastings, its people, the council and Hastings Pier. Looking at the continuing mess, he wonders if it’s time to resave the pier.

Slots where slots shouldn’t be

Even in high summer, Hastings Pier is looking meagre still, with more toy animals than visitors. (Closing at 5pm in high summer probably doesn’t help.) The ‘new amusement area’ has opened — but some of gaming machines are where they should not be. What will Hastings Borough Council (HBC) do? Bernard McGinley looks at a needlessly drawn-out problem.

Planners back slot machine proposal for central pier rooms

The central ‘Deck’/visitor centre building of Hastings Pier is fully recommended by HBC officers for conversion to two rooms full of fruit machines (‘slots’).  Why are legal and policy protections being ignored? Bernard McGinley tries to peer more closely into the matter.

Planning committee proves decisive for pier and Stade

Would the Stade footpath get a reprieve? Would the Pier sheds be refused permission? Would sound arguments prevail? Of course not — this is Hastings. Observing the planning committee at work, Bernard McGinley gets the Mugsborough Blues.

Only two weeks to save Hastings Pier!

The pier is now up for sale to a commercial buyer: the last time this happened it was left to decay and was eventually abandoned. Erica Smith reminds us to show our support for keeping the pier run by the community.
