John Cole’s Shadow Boxers

John Cole’s photographic work will be familiar to many Hastings folk through his books about the Hastings fishing community featured in Generations and Sea Dogs, as well as his work being prominently displayed on the net huts around the Stade. He told HOT’s Lauris Morgan-Griffiths about a new book he has in gestation called Shadow Boxers, which goes back to the 1970s and ’80s when he spent time in the sweaty boxing gyms and arenas in New York and Jersey.

John Logie Baird and the Invention of Television inspires a new generation of artists

Artists inspired by John Logie Baird the Hastings-based inventor who was working on ‘seeing by wireless’ one hundred years ago exhibit at the Electro Studios Project Space for the Spirit of Invention festival. Chris Simpson came down from London to co-curate the show with  Jude Montague who talks about the preparations for the festival show and talking to BBC South East Television about the inventor of television.

The Spirit of Invention exhibition at Electro Studios celebrates John Logie Baird’s amazing inventions. It includes locally built technology from the 1960s amongside new work by artists from Hastings and London. It runs Friday 10 to Sunday 12 May. Jude Montague, who is curating the show alongside Chris Simpson, shares an updated report.

Beating of the Bounds of All Saints Parish: Saturday 11 May

Around the Old Town on Saturday 11 May, at 10.30 am, the ancient (if intermittent) ceremony of beating the bounds will be conducted. The Ancient Romans did it. The Scottish and English Borderers do it, and many others. Bernard McGinley explains.

Tories’ PCC solace and encouraging turnout in the locals

Some solace for local Conservatives after their poor local election results was provided by Katy Bourne, who came home an easy winner yet again in the election for Sussex police and crime commissioner. HOTs election commentator Chris Connelley reports from yesterday’s nail-biting count on a historic day when the Greens became the largest party on Hastings Borough Council just three years after taking their first seat.
