Bexhill residents protest about plans to house refugees at former prison camp

On Saturday afternoon, between 150 and 200 local people gathered at the site of the former Northeye Prison, to the west of Bexhill. They were there to object to government plans to turn the site into a housing solution for asylum seekers. The proposal is in response to concerns that too much money is spent housing asylum seekers in hotels. Erica Smith reports.

HPC launch new season with Mozart and Haydn

The Hastings Philharmonic Choir launches its 2023 season on 15 April at Christ Church in St Leonards with two classical masterpieces: Mozart’s ‘Great’ Mass in C minor and Haydn’s Te Deum. They will be accompanied by the Hastings Philharmonic Orchestra, which will also perform Mozart’s Bassoon Concerto. Press officer Gareth Simpson reports.

Beatles Day on Sunday

British Summer Time is with us, and with it comes the Beatles Day extravaganza, which will be celebrated this coming Sunday 2 April at the White Rock Theatre. With performances over four stages from midday until late, visitors not only have hard choices to make but will require stamina. ‘Spare Us’ parody to be launched on 1 April

Do you recall the hoo-hah and excitement over the launch of Prince Harry’s ‘spare no-one’ autobiography that was launched all those weeks ago on 10 January? If it was too long, or just not your ‘Cup of Royal Tea’, then you might prefer to read Spare Us by locally-based author Bruno Vincent. Erica Smith leafs through this surprisingly gentle parody.

Yes! to Youth Investment Fund for Hastings Commons

Great news for young people in Hastings today as Hastings Commons secures a large Youth Investment Fund grant. Hastings Commons is to receive £8.6m in funding from the Youth Investment Fund (YIF) to develop their spaces for, and by, young people aged 11-18. Jazz Hastings: Matt Ridley and The Antidote

Highly-praised double bass player and guitarist Matt Ridley will be appearing at the next monthly session of Jazz Hastings on Tuesday 4 April along with his band, The Antidote, whose music aims to bridge the divide between contemporary jazz, classical music and progressive rock.
