Council planners inconsistent on 5G decisions

The recent trio of planning applications for 5G telecommunications masts nearly 60 feet (18m) high have been decided by Hastings Borough Council (HBC). Warrior Square (‘528’) was nixed because it’s in a Conservation Area. Little Ridge Avenue (‘526’), just south of the Conquest, was refused because of the damage to visual amenity. The one beside the Oval (HS/TL/22/00527) was approved however. Bernard McGinley reports.

Colouring the urban landscape

We can’t complain we haven’t had a summer this year. And summer is colour – the sea, summer fruits, summer dresses. And it is uplifting to see colour radiating from the Hastings Arts Forum walls. David Reeve’s excellent show, Urban Landscapes, celebrates his work past and present. HOT’s Lauris Morgan-Griffiths was energised by his images which were a departure from earlier work vibrated in the HAF space.

Beauport Park monument suffering from neglect

While exploring Beauport Park woods, Chris Bell, a retired architect and Zoom Arts member living in St Leonards, discovered a monument, now sadly neglected among a cluster of holiday chalets, built by a previous owner of the woods in the 19th century in honour of his departed wife. The writer laments such poor treatment of our building heritage.

Hastings Pier celebrated at 150 years: peerlessness remembered

The very first August Bank Holiday was in 1872. In Hastings, that was the day that Hastings Pier opened. 150 years later to the day, there was a party. Bernard McGinley reports.
