Polo Piatti gives us the works!

Those who enjoy the music of Polo Piatti, and appreciate the many contributions he has made to Hastings’ musical life, can enjoy a whole concert of his works, performed by the composer and friends, at the Opus Theatre on Saturday 20 August. Nick Terdre reports.

The programme includes some of Polo’s most moving and well-known compositions: Lullaby For A ClownDuty SublimeAgitatoBohemian CadenzaA Fairytale, Impromptu and excerpts from his recently premiered Old World Cello Concerto.

Polo began composing seriously at 16, by which time he had already been performing in public for several years. His creative urge is sparked by landscapes and sights he sees on his travels, and since he arrived in Hastings 15 years ago, the sea.

A walk on the East Hill is also often the source of inspiration. “I was trained the old-fashioned way, with pen and paper” he says, so he always takes pen and manuscript paper with him in case the muse strikes. It may be the germ of an idea to be developed back home, or sometimes he sketches out a whole piece sitting in the inspiring surroundings.

Dreams are also a fruitful source of inspiration – when he wakes in the middle of the night with an idea sounding in his head, he has to make for the studio and get it written down before it fades.

Some of his best known work originated in dreams, as is the case of A Fairytale, which he will perform on Saturday with flautist Daisy Noton. “The majority of the stuff I have dreamt turns into quite successful pieces,” he says.

Much of his full-scale religious work, Libera Nos, which will be receiving its world premiere in November at the De La Warr Pavilion, was born in dreams.

And for the audience at Saturday’s concert there will be more intimate details about how his music is composed, he promises.

As well as Daisy Noton, special guests will include local soprano Thomasine Trezise, violinist Laura Rickard, pianist Berniya Hamie, clarinettist Galina Baxter and cellist Riya Hamie, while the popular local shanty singers Sound Of Rock-A-Nore will also put in an appearance.
