Heritage weekend raises money for Alexandra Park Greenhouse

As part of the Heritage Open Days event, the Alexandra Park greenhouse opened its doors last weekend to a host of visitors in a continued bid to help raise money for the ‘Lets Raise the Roof’ campaign. The event helped contribute £900 to the campaign’s £10,000 target which of writing stands at £9,309. Donations are still welcome as the campaign has been extended until 30 September. The Alexandra Greenhouse Group recently issued the following release giving thanks to those who pledged their support over the weekend. Words supplied by Lynda Foy, pictures by Colin Foy.

Walking and cycling: “ESCC’s lack of ambition dispiriting”

Funding for walking and cycling infrastructure provided by the transport ministry’s Emergency Active Travel Fund has given East Sussex County Council the opportunity to demonstrate its ambitions for creating safe and practical transport arrangements for pedestrians and cyclists alongside the traditionally prioritised road traffic. After years of interacting with the county council, however, cycling enthusiast Tim Godwin has lost all faith in its ability to provide good walking and cycling solutions. Nick Terdre reports.

Catch her in Rye

What do Shostakovich, Debussy and Ravel have in common with Elbow? Lynne Page has put together an exquisite cast of performers for some specially produced dance theatre, entitled ‘Wingspan,’ to be held at Bridgepoint, the new creative arts complex in Rye, celebrating the tenacity of the human spirit in this extraordinary time. The music is an inspired combination of Shostakovich, Debussy, Ravel and Elbow, writes Chris Cormack.

Foreshore team tackles seabed obstruction

Members of Hastings Borough Council’s foreshore team sprang into action after paddleboarders reported potentially dangerous material on the seabed, exposed at low tide just east of the pier. Cllr Colin Fitzgerald, lead councillor for the foreshore, explains what happened.

MP reaffirms support for West St Leonards campaign

Local residents opposed to the council’s plan for a large housing development on the old bathing pool site in West St Leonards met last weekend with local MP Sally-Ann Hart, who, they report, supports their campaign. After lengthy delays the council has yet to sign an exclusivity deal with its chosen developer. Bryan Fisher of Save Our Bathing Site (SOBS) provides an update. 

Sussex Wildlife Trust response to Coronavirus

As the Rye Harbour Nature Reserve recently held its first guided walk in several months, the Sussex Wildlife Trust recently announced that they have achieved the official UK Tourism ‘We’re Good to Go’ industry and consumer mark as they slowly begin to re-open their facilities and limited events to the public. The trust recently released the following announcement.
