Second Use – exhibition of the old, the discarded and the beautiful

The medium artists chose to work with is always interesting. Two local artists, Carly Ralph and Lynne Bingham work in similar ways as they celebrate, the old, the disused, unwanted artefacts and give them new life in a way that the things themselves could never have imagined. HOT’s Lauris Morgan-Griffiths visited their exhibition at Hastings Arts Forum to see how their differences and similarities come together.

Enchanting summer theatre celebrating a remarkable forgotten female artist

Following on from their acclaimed Windrush production, ExploreTheArch, Sussex’s experiential and most unconventional theatre company, are back with a hauntingly beautiful inter-European migration story. The House of Marcelle is inspired by the love letters of an extraordinary Belgian painter, Marcelle van Caillie. Marcelle settled in London in 1955, one of many restless Europeans shifting around the continent after the trauma of WW2. The show opens on Monday 29 July and runs into August. HOT’s Erica Smith enters the turbulent world of a remarkable woman.

Moon landing in St Leonards

It is the 50th anniversary of the first moon landings. So it is not surprising that there has been wall-to-wall radio and television coverage of the event. Even St Leonards is marking the occasion. HOT’s Lauris Morgan-Griffiths wandered, earthbound, down the King’s Road to see St Leonards’ own celebration of the first American space exploration in a surprising exhibition.
