It is hard setting up a new project in Hastings because there is always so much going on; and a brand new photographic festival could have been labelled madness. There are a lot of good photographers in the area but photographers are notoriously lone wolves and do not like to be herded together. Hastings Against War will commemorate those who lost their lives in the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 with a ceremony at the boating lake in Alexandra Park on Monday August 6th. An estimated 185,000 people perished after US airforce planes bombed the cities, dying as a result of the initial blast, due to fires sparked by the bombs and as a result of radiation-sickness caused by the explosions. In a new initiative Care for the Carers is launching support groups for unpaid carers of people with dementia. The groups will be based in three East Sussex towns, including Bexhill. Meanwhile Music for the Memory has released dates for the forthcoming meetings of its Battle singing group for dementia sufferers. Nick Terdre reports.
This weekend, a street party will be held in West Street in Hastings Old Town, to celebrate the launch of The West Street Chronicle: a free printed publication which aims to detail and memorialise the scarcely mentioned history of West Street. HOT’s Jordan Dixon writes.
