What’s HOT at the White Rock Theatre
HOT’s Paul Way-Rider takes a look at some of the offerings coming up at the White Rock Theatre (WRT) in August and beyond.
The multi-award-winning comedian Rhod Gilbert’s ‘The Book of John‘, will come to the WRT in 2019 on his first tour in 6 years! Tickets are on general sale and the show will be on Wednesday 17 July 2019 at 8pm.
Rhod has appeared on many top TV shows including , ‘‘Would I Lie to You?’, ‘Taskmaster’, ‘Qi’, ‘The Apprentice: You’re Fired’, ‘Live at The Apollo’, ‘Have I Got News for You?’, and ‘Rhod Gilbert’s Work Experience’

Below is a selection of productions at the WRT featured in August.
Grease – Thursday 9th to Saturday 11 August
This is a White Rock Youth Theatre presentation. The theatre becomes Rydell High as the stars of tomorrow, led by a West-end production team, present the feel good musical that’s just ‘too cool for school’.
Following on from last year’s Summer Youth Project of Oliver!, the White Rock Theatre presents the original high-school musical Grease.
Performed by local youngsters aged between 9-19 years, Grease is the WRT’s 16th Summer Youth Project, and is directed for the second year running by “serial Hastings panto legend” Ben Watson. The show features songs including ‘You’re The One That I Want‘, ‘Grease‘, ‘Summer Nights‘ and ‘Hopelessly Devoted To You‘.
Tea Dance – Wednesday 29 August – 2pm
The White Rock Theatre provides a wonderful setting for a traditional tea dance. Take to the floor for an afternoon of Ballroom and Latin dancing.
Your hostess, Top Hat, will be on hand helping to recall memories of a forgotten era whilst hopefully creating new ones. Included in the price is a high tea and this event takes place in the Sussex Studio
80’s Mania – Thursday 30 August
80’s Mania features the music of 25 chart-topping pop stars including:
Duran Duran, Human League, Culture Club, Wham!, Madness, Madonna, Spandau Ballet, Cyndi Lauper, Adam Ant, Bananarama, Erasure, Nena, Soft Cell, Toni Basil, Dead or Alive, Kim Wilde plus many more and all performed by The New Romantic Band and the 80’s Mania Dancers.
Hits include ‘Don’t You Want Me Baby’, ‘Call Me’, ‘Relax’, ‘Tainted Love’, ‘Girls Just Wanna Have Fun’, ‘Karma Chameleon’, ‘Holiday’, ‘Kids in America’, ‘Stand and Deliver’, ‘Venus’, ‘Respect’, ‘I Think We’re Alone Now’, ‘Baggy Trousers’, ‘Rio’, Hey Mickey, ‘Turning Japanese’ and more.

The Real Thing, Gwen Dickey and Heatwave – Friday 31 August
A soul/disco triple header 70’s Disco returns to the White Rock theatre after The Real Thing played there in 2016. The band will perform all their classic hits, ‘You to Me Are Everything’, ‘Can You Feel the Force’, ‘Can’t Get By Without You’ and many more.
Special guests Heatwave perform their hits ‘Boogie Nights’, ‘Mind Blowin Decisions’ and ‘Always and Forever’.
Plus Gwen Dickey, lead singer of Rose Royce, performs all the Rose Royce hits, ‘Love Don’t Live Here Anymore’, ‘Car Wash’, ‘Is it Love You’re After’, ‘Wishing on a Star’ and many more. The evening is completed by a DJ playing 70s Disco and Motown favourites.
