‘First In The World Somewhere’

First In The World Somewhere is a memoir by local resident, Penny Pepper: writer, poet, activist and punky pioneer. Described by actor, comedian and activist, Liz Carr as “A force of nature and a voice like no other”. Penny will be performing in Hastings, her home town, at Bookbuster in November.

Maggi Hambling’s The Quick & the Dead

One of the most popular paintings in the Jerwood Gallery is Maggi Hambling’s Portrait of Frances Rose; when it is not on display, it is often enquired after. And our very own Erica Smith won the Jerwood short story prize with an imagined fictional account of Frances Rose’s life. HOT’s Lauris Morgan-Griffiths went along to the Jerwood to see Hambling’s exhibition, The Quick & the Dead. 

Jazz Hastings: Remi Harris plays guitar

Jazz Hastings’ gig on Tuesday 6 November features guitarist Remi Harris and his trio. It will be an evening to look forward to, says Julian Norridge – Remi has been described by Jamie Cullum as “an extraordinary musician” while Cerys Matthews has said he plays “astonishing stuff”.

Community Project Award for Bike Lab

Local community group Bike Lab Hastings were shortlisted in in the Best Community Project category for Cycling UK’s 2018 Volunteer of the Year Awards.

Award leads to ‘secret garden’

Hastings-based support charity Education Futures Trust (EFT) were recently given a boost when they were chosen by Sussex Lund to receive an award.  The funds have been allocated to a new project at The Firs with plans to create a ‘secret garden’ for local families to enjoy.

FoIs reveal council’s Rocklands appeal costs

The legal costs incurred by the council in its efforts to keep the causes of landslides in Rocklands caravan park under wraps have been revealed through a series of Freedom of Information submissions. In the process, concerns have been raised about the council’s handling of such requests. Nick Terdre reports.
