As the result of the announcement that the Post Office intends to downgrade the London Road Crown Post Office in St Leonards, a public meeting has been arranged for Monday 17 July. Erica Smith catches up with the Save the Crown Post Office campaign.

American Independence Day, 4 July, saw a meeting in Hastings which focused on the resistance within America to Donald Trump’s presidency. US-born local resident, Tamara Stevens, spoke about the opposition triggered by Trump’s election victory last November. At the meeting she explained that central to the opposition has been Indivisible: a guide to the most effective ways to influence Congress. The guide was produced by former Congressional workers who understood what made politicians listen, an insight gained by observing the success of the right-wing Tea Party movement in influencing US politics. The campaign to save St Leonards Crown Post Office has a new challenge: last week Post Office staff were informed that management are planning to hand over the London Road branch to a ‘retail partner’, who has already taken over three village post office branches in East Sussex, and is about to become the franchisee of Newhaven Post Office.
