A totally alternative election night

As both politicians and impressarios know, things never go according to plan. Back in February, Blurt and Near Jazz Experience were set to share the stage at Kino-Teatr. Unfortunately Ted Milton – the man behind Blurt since 1979 – was ill and the gig was postponed until 8 June. Then Theresa May announced a general election. Erica Smith finds out how to escape election madness into a whole new world of musical madness.

She-bang-ing on!

‘Easter Thursday’ heralded the launch night of a classier-than-average and more-female-focussed-than-usual spoken word night at The Printworks. HOT’s Erica Smith was there to watch The Whole She-Bang kick off and is preparing herself for the second, Election Night Special event.

Ed Boxall pier workshop

Come along to a free family fun-day on Hastings Pier on Saturday 10 June. Local author and illustrator, Ed Boxall and Hastings Pier have teamed up to create a new children’s book about the Pier, which will be launched on the day. Ed will also be offering free storytelling workshops during the day. Annalise Elam from

Parliament or prison for our MP?

HOT’s Chris Coverdale, an anti-war activist and stickler for the law, believes Britain’s politicians and voters should take the country’s international undertakings on refraining from waging war seriously. Here he examines local MP Amber Rudd’s relevant voting record and asks whether we should re-elect Ms Rudd or send her and her colleagues to prison.

The RH Experience

“We’re a comedy group, bringing our show ‘Scribble’ to the Hastings Fringe. It’s an improvised sketch show, with lots of on-the-spot jokes, songs and characters, all inspired by the audience, so it’s different every time. It’s set against a backdrop that’s illustrated live by Ed Stockham, who draws for the Beano.” Judy Parkinson spoke to Conor Jatter, one quarter of the RH Experience

Transition Town news

This Sunday (4 June) Transition Town Hastings are hosting ‘A Day To Clear Your Shed and Clear Your Head’. 11:00–15:00 at St Leonards Warrior Square railway station.

Highly Inflammable

Highly Inflammable: waiting to explode under the dome in St Mary In The Castle, Hastings. When soon-to-be music icon, Marianne Elliott-Said saw the Sex Pistols on Hastings Pier, she was inspired to form her own punk band. Marion became Poly Styrene and X-Ray Spex was born.

Imagine That!

This year marks the Platinum Anniversary of the Hastings Writers’ Group. Yes, that’s 70 years! As part of their celebrations, they decided to publish a children’s anthology to support local charities and encourage the authors of the future. Amanda Giles from the Anthology Team writes.
