The Ghost of Dunkirk moves to a new home

On Saturday 17 June, the ‘Cyril and Lilian Bishop’, Hastings’ lifeboat from 1931-1950, our ‘Ghost of Dunkirk’, is moving to her final resting place. HOT’s Chandra Masoliver asks Dee-Day White and Tush Hamilton how they inspired countless local people to become involved in the project.

The Great Get Together

On 18 June, the Transition Town team are hosting The Great Get-Together with The Big Lunch from 13:00–16:00 in Warrior Square Gardens. An event catalysed by the death of MP, Jo Cox, who believed that we humans share more similarities than differences.

Interested in what happens to our recycled materials?

Transition Town Hastings have booked a visit to Hollingdean Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) on Friday 14 July from 10am. The presentation and tour take about two hours to complete. MRF sorts and bulks household waste from all over East Sussex. Then it’s transported onwards to recycling, recovery and disposal facilities.

Association of Carers champions unpaid carers

With over 62,000 unpaid carers in East Sussex alone, this group makes up one of the most isolated in the UK – and tend to be our true unsung heroes. With 3 in 5 of us expected to become a carer at some point in our lives, let’s make this week the one that we sit up and applaud these often hidden champions.

Rudd retains seat with slim majority

No change in Hastings & Rye – but it was a close-run contest, with sitting MP Amber Rudd just retaining her seat as Labour’s Peter Chowney reversed his party’s 2015 decline with a vengeance. The smaller parties found themselves squeezed. Nick Terdre reports on the general election results.

Clean air alerts

Residents are being encouraged to sign up for alerts about air pollution levels as part of a national awareness week. Sussex-Air – the county’s air quality partnership – is throwing its support behind the British Lung Foundation’s Breathe Easy Week, which runs from June 12 to June 16, and is urging people to sign up to its airAlert service.
