Sudden halt to Rudd’s meteoric rise

Local MP Amber Rudd’s resignation as Home Secretary brings her hitherto meteoric rise to the top of British politics to a sudden halt. While opposition parties in Hastings welcome the widespread condemnation of the ‘hostile environment’ policy for immigrants which Ms Rudd was in charge of implementing, they have different takes on its wider significance and her political future. Nick Terdre reports.

Responding to the Windrush generation ‘crisis’

Alex Ntung is a former refugee from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Hastings was his home from the year 2000 until he moved to Canterbury in 2015. He is currently an Associate Lecturer in the Faculty of Education at Canterbury Christ Church University. He has occupied various roles and responsibilities in the area of community cohesion, and he is a co-founder of Education 4 Diversity charity. He is also the father of two children, both British-born (in the Conquest Hospital). Here, he writes about Windrush from his perspective.

Hastings Harbour: Promises, Empty Promises: Fishermen Protest against Tory Policy.

HOT’s Chandra Masoliver reports on the recent Fishermen’s Protest against Tory policy. She interviews three local fishermen, Paul Joy, Chairman of Hastings Fishermen’s Protection Society (HFPS) and Co-Chairman of the New Under Ten’s Association (NUTFA), which protects the rights of under ten metre fishing boats; Paul Stanley, fisherman and boy ashore; and Roland Kelly, owner of RX52, RX53, RX54 and DR169. Viability loophole hits affordable housing

The government has announced measures to tackle Britain’s housing crisis, including ending the abuse of viability assessments by developers to dodge their obligations to build affordable housing. In the first of two articles Nick Terdre looks at how viability assessments have become so problematic, the council’s response and how the town’s supply of affordable housing has suffered.

Yes and no to government housing proposals
