The Red Shed tour with Mark Thomas

Political activist. Performer. Journalist. Self-described ‘belligerent egotist’. Mark Thomas visits St Mary in the Castle in Hastings as part of his current nationwide tour, The Red Shed: ‘a tale of strikes, fights, dinner ladies, crap beer, good beer, burger slingers, pickets, placards, commies, friendship, love, history, dreams and, above all, remembering rather than forgetting’. He will also give a talk about comedy, art, politics and misbehaving in the St Mary in the Castle café-bar, raising money for Hastings Furniture Service of which he’s the patron. HOT’s Zelly Restorick reports.

Octet

In musical terms an octet refers to eight singers or musicians who perform together in complementary fashion. In Octet, currently on exhibition at St Mary in the Castle, eight Photo Hastings photographers exhibit together in a complimentary fashion that any musical ensemble would be proud of.

Headaches for planners due to documents missing from West Hill Road case file

The sudden emergence of development activity on a long neglected site at the Bo-Peep end of West Hill Road in July caused an outcry, not only about the razing of what had become a rich wildlife habitat but also about the legality of the proposed development 28 years after planning permission was originally granted. After viewing the case file, Chris Lewcock, chairman of Hastings Urban Design Group, found plenty of questions raising their heads, including whether the planning permission is valid. Nick Terdre reports.

Victory for black team in chess-archery contest

Team Rasa with the black pieces triumphed in the second Hastings Chess-Archery Contest held at Horntye Park in late October. The event, which brings together two sporting activities with a long tradition in Hastings, was deemed a success by all and will hopefully become an annual fixture. Nick Terdre reports. Claremont creative industry community?

Now that the distraction of Root 1066/Bonfire Night/Coastal Currents/Hastings Fringe has died down – it’s time to start looking at this again, writes Richard De Pesando, who a few months ago wrote about the concept of a Claremont Creative Community in Hastings.

Savings and support on the menu at Energy Café

Families across Hastings are urged to visit the town’s Energy Café TODAY to access practical free services and money saving advice. UK Power Networks has joined forces with the organisers, Energise Sussex Coast and Citizens Advice 1066, to help bring energy saving tips and advice to those struggling with their fuel bills. They will also be helping people in vulnerable situations to join the Priority Services Register for free extra help in the rare event of a power cut.
