A photographic walk through Brexit land

Ian Land has produced a formidable body of landscapes, shaped and formed by us, the British. He decided to take his camera for a walk – the coastal route from Hastings to London – and the results are now on display in an exhibition at Hastings Arts Forum. It is a desolate, gloomy marginal area – the end of England. And so it appears to be turning out, for those born and bred here who feel European and want to remain so. HOT’s Lauris Morgan-Griffiths was impressed by the exhibition’s unflinching honesty; sometimes to the point where you want to look away as he captures the spirit of England – and it isn’t a very edifying sight.

Launch of Silver Hill Press

There is definitely an appetite, pride and support for enterprising, affordable, well produced local publishing. Hastings Fish Cook Book is a specialist private publishing company, which published its first cook book in 2009 and produced three different editions and several reprints. The first edition sold out of a print run of 10,00o. Now there is another independent enterprise, Silverhill Press. Photographer Ian Land had the great idea of publishing a series of art monographs starting with photography and then extending out to poetry, possibly illustration and collage. HOT’s Lauris Morgan-Griffiths asked Ian some questions about the project.

Blood Lake/Still Point/Dark Matter

Blood Lake/Still Point/Dark Matter, an intriguing title for a photography show. HOT’s Lauris Morgan-Griffiths went to find out more about the work of Ian Land, Alexander Brattell and Chris Wainwright at their exhibition at St Mary in the Castle. It’s an interesting show, each photographer political in their own way.

Octet

In musical terms an octet refers to eight singers or musicians who perform together in complementary fashion. In Octet, currently on exhibition at St Mary in the Castle, eight Photo Hastings photographers exhibit together in a complimentary fashion that any musical ensemble would be proud of.

Reasons to stay in Europe

On both sides here has been much anger, lies and, at times, debate that would embarrass a four-year-old. HOT’s Lauris Morgan-Griffiths asked a few local Hastings and St Leonards-ites about their thoughts and concerns on Europe and why they are in favour of remaining.
