Solar-powered flight becomes reality

A solar-powered plane with the wingspan of a Jumbo Jet, weighing no more than a family car, has today landed in Japan on its way to Hawaii. Solar Impulse is a first in aviation history, has already broken records for staying in the air – and although we’re still a long way from replacing current passenger planes with solar-powered ones, this is an amazing, pioneeringly innovative step in the right direction of a clean, renewable energy future. HOT’s Zelly Restorick spreads the word about alternative energy sources that are clean and sustainable.

Local LibDems target Trident with public forum

One of the issues apparently decided by the outcome of the General Election is whether or not to renew Britain’s military nuclear capacity: Trident. The four Vanguard Class submarines that carry the Trident missiles will have to be replaced in 2028, which means that work on that project has already started on the drawing board. HOT’s Chris Cormack thinks there should still be scope for informed public debate, which is being offered by Hastings’ LibDems.

Drone Against The Drones

Hastings Against War has organised this peaceful protest against the use of military drones. Drone Against the Drones takes place at 6.30pm on Thursday 4 June. Want to attend? Meet at the pier for a public demonstration and then march to The Royal Standard in the Old Town for music and speeches.  This local public demonstration is part of an ongoing national campaign, leading to a week of action in October.

The Devines

The Devines are a popular Irish traditional folk group who make frequent visits to Hastings. HOT’s Sean O’ Shea caught up with them at the Stag Inn and talked with John Devine about the bands origins, the evolution of the Irish folk scene, seanós dancing and lilting.

Walking the walk at ARK Blacklands

ARK Blacklands Primary Academy took part in the recent Walk to School Week, under the enthusiastic leadership of teaching assistant James Bacon, who turned his personal participation into an opportunity to raise funds for the Stroke Association in memory of late council leader Jeremy Birch. James explained all to Nick Terdre.

Storm in a tea cup

‘Trail blazer’. ‘Pioneer’. ‘Innovator’. ‘Explorer’. Words written down after interviewing Brendan Walker – a man The Times has dubbed ‘The World’s Only Thrill Engineer’. HOT’s Zelly Restorick explains.

Chowney elected new council leader

At the annual council meeting on Friday, Councillor Peter Chowney was elected leader of the council in place of the late Jeremy Birch. Lead member posts were also allocated, Nick Terdre reports.
