Amy by Susan Elliot
Archiving the cupboards and mantelpieces of a nation
This exhibition of mosaic and ceramic art shows the work of Susan Elliott, an artist with an international reputation, living and working in St Leonards on Sea, writes HOT’s John Knowles.
Susan Elliot is an artist whose materials are tourist mementoes, souvenirs, found ceramics and traditional mosaic tesserae. Her works are held in London, New York, Tokyo, Toronto, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Hong Kong and Miami.
Susan creates multi-layered works, which play with identity and iconography, juxtaposing text and images to create hidden narratives within each piece. Susan often deals with popular figures and pop art motifs (previous works include David Bowie, Nick Cave, The Queen and Kate Moss) giving her scope to comment on celebratory status and to find new uses for her studio’s brimming collection of recognisable slogans, logos and tourist tat. Part of the joy of Susan’s creativity is the recognition of the familiar within her works and of the discovery of nostalgic materials used.
This exhibition, in her home-town, will also display her most recent work dealing with folklore, fairy tales and mythology.
