CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory at The White Rock Theatre.

White Rock’s Chocolate Factory is a world of pure imagination

Hastings White Rock’s Learning and Participation department  present this year’s Summer Youth Project, Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. There are five performances on the main stage commencing with a gala night on Thursday 15 August and running until Saturday 17 August.

A cast of 100 young local performers will take audiences to Roald Dahl’s whimsical world as Charlie Bucket and his golden ticket-winning companions explore the magical wonders of Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory. This year’s full-scale musical production features an impressive set accompanied by a live band and colourful costumes.

The long-running Summer Youth Project is in its 21st year and offers local people aged 8-18 an artistic outlet for during the summer holidays, as well as the experience of working in a venue under the direction of a professional creative team. Everyone involved works together to craft the show in under two weeks.

Directing this year’s show is actor and director Ben Watson, who is best known locally for his regular starring roles in the White Rock’s annual pantomime. He is supported by Musical Director Lesley van Egmond, as well as choreographer, Rebecca Hastings.

Producing the show is the venue’s Learning and Participation Manager, Laura Bateman, who comments:

“The theatre comes alive when it’s full of energetic young people, and everyone is excited about this year’s title. We have secured an incredible set, which includes an enormous LED screen and a working lift for different levels on stage. It will be a spectacle so please come and support our local talent – it’s going to be incredible!”

Over 2000 young people have taken part in the initiative since the first Summer Youth Project in 2003. Previous participants have gone on to have successful careers in the creative industries and gained scholarships for drama schools.

Tickets from £12 can be booked online at whiterocktheatre.org.uk or by calling the box office on 01424 462280.
