‘When The Oak Spoke’
‘When The Oak Spoke’ is a socially engaged art commission led by local visual artist, Beccy McCray for Wadhurst Culture: a community arts charity in Wadhurst in East Sussex. This year-long project reveals invisible forms of woodland communication and gives trees a voice – especially the oak, an important symbol of Wadhurst.
Inspired by folklore and seasonal rites, ‘When The Oak Spoke’ generates a dialogue between the local community and its trees, building a sense of stewardship towards these generous giants, promoting conservation and exploring the interconnectedness of all living things.

Beccy is working with diverse local groups and a public learning and participation programme, which highlights how vital woodland is to the future of our planet, whilst simultaneously celebrating the power of trees to inspire. Following a year long series of events and workshops, the project is coming to fruition at the Midsummer Tree Party on Saturday 22 June from 3pm til 6pm.
The accompanying talks, creative workshops, wellbeing and cultural activities are suitable for all ages (see posters below). The opening ceremony will incorporate ancient woodland rituals, workshops, food stalls and performance.
“Trees are so important to us and our environment,” says Beccy “and particularly the oak – the tree of Wadhurst.”

The Midsummer Tree Party will culminate in a new ritual, to mark the opening of the installation artwork, devised in collaboration with and featuring performer Emma Joliffe, singer/song writer Gwyneth Herbert, violinist Yoon-ji Kim (Notes From The Underground) and the artist herself. This costumed, live art intervention invites us to connect with Wadhurst’s precious oak trees and offers an exciting first glimpse of the installation artwork.
