A meal fit for Caesar!
As part of the history syllabus, Archimedes class at Ark Blacklands Primary Academy decided to delve into the world of Roman cooking. Teaching assistant James Bacon reports.
The enthusiastic year 4 children were bold enough to not only prepare one piece of Ancient Roman food, but three dishes. After much stirring, kneading, chopping and crushing with a pestle and mortar, we were all able to appreciate the delights of their rustic Roman bread, sweet tasting honey-cake and delicious Columella salad, which is made with salted fresh cheese.
It was a pleasure to work with the children, who all did an amazing job at creating this culinary success! The children thoroughly enjoyed preparing this Roman feast, which was accompanied with grapes, cucumber and raw cabbage dipped in vinegar for the full Roman experience.
Headteacher Lorraine Clarke was lucky enough to taste the last piece of the food and was thoroughly impressed with the tastiness and texture of their cooking.
We are all looking forward to learning more from each other about life in Roman times in the weeks to come.
