The Proclaimers come to town!

How many miles would you walk to see The Proclaimers?! They’ll be appearing at The White Rock Theatre on 1 December, as part of their UK and Ireland tour 2018. The Proclaimers have carved out a niche for themselves in the netherworld where pop, folk, new wave and punk collide. In the process, they have enjoyed Gold and Platinum singles and albums in the UK, USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

Discoveries on Queens Road

Queens Road is a part of Hastings that has been a long time in regeneration. Now it looks like the balance might be tipping in its favour, as new businesses begin to emerge. HOT’s Nick Weekes had a look around.

Another Crossing is a collaborative artistic venture by documentary photographer Giovanna Del Sarto and visual artist Bern O’Donoghue, in which they bring their work together to track experiences of precarious living in the framework of the current European humanitarian crisis. Both work though their art to explore our response to the displacement and suffering of those from afar seeking sanctuary with us, using a combination of photography, installation, and discussion. Felicity Laurence from Hastings Community of Sanctuary invites us to join two remarkable artists and talk about crossing cultural boundaries.

Over 70s urged to check for signs of breast cancer

PUBLIC health bosses in East Sussex are urging women over 70 to check their breasts for early signs of cancer. The call comes as a new national Be Clear On Cancer campaign launches, aimed at highlighting the symptoms and the importance of early diagnosis.

Hastings Litfest seeks local literary volunteers

Local literary fans are invited to become volunteers at Hastings Litfest, the South Coast’s newest Literary Festival, which is coming to Hastings from 31 August to 2 September this year. The festival needs local people to help make the event an amazing success story so that it can go on to become an annual fixture in the town.

Divertimento

Energy efficient visitor centre at Hastings Country Park

HOT has heard from Hastings Borough Council that they are in the final stages of planning to build the new visitor centre for Hastings Country Park. They say that the visitor centre will offer improved facilities for visitors to the park with the opportunity to learn about all the park has to offer (past and present), to take part in events and activities and to relax and enjoy the amazing views over the English Channel.

Fly Kites Not Drones 2018

In this country, we currently – and one can only hope and pray, permanently – enjoy skies that are free of drone warfare. Residents of other countries are not so lucky. Why we think we can use this technology against others and imagine it will never happen to us, is beyond comprehension. Acknowledging this, Hastings Against War has organised Fly Kites Not Drones 2018, in peaceful solidarity with people who live in countries where drones have been and are still causing death, injury and fear. Rona Drennen writes.
