Twelve by Six - Artist's Critique Group Show

Twelve by Six – Artist’s Critique Group Show at Traditional Art Gallery, Western Road, Bexhill-on-Sea.

For six weeks the De La warr Pavilion is showcasing the work of twelve local artists at a pop-up project space in Bexhill town centre. Representing a wide range of professional art practice, the project is a rolling sequence of week long exhibitions, including painting, installation, print-making, sculpture and photography. All of the participating artists are active members of the Pavilion’s Artist critique Group which provides a context within which local artists, and those from outside the region, may present and discuss their work. Hot Reporter Joe Fearn took a look at a very saucy exhibit.

First to catch my eye as I entered The Traditional Art Gallery on Western road, were two floor sculptures by Hermione Allsopp, called ‘Pot Cluster’ against the left wall and ‘Proximity of Strangers‘ on the floor in the centre of the art space.

These works are very striking, and I can only say come and see them for yourself, because they are so hard to describe or define.

On the back wall is Ben Browton’s ‘TOXIC (the etchery of trimmages) 2010’, which is a play on Magritte’s famous artwork of a pipe. Atop the case which houses the artwork, is a small model of an orange man, (Ben perhaps) happily attempting to pee on the on-lookers, naughty man.

Or, rather, should I say saucy, for all the works on show have a definite saucy theme, like Fiona Pienkowska’s x2 Drypoint & coloured images entitled ‘Commuters’ & ‘Cabaret’, on the right wall. ‘Cabaret’ shows a crowd listening to a female singer, and I couldn’t help noticing one of the ladies on the dance-floor depicted kissing the neck of another lady who seems to be enjoying it enthusiastically.

For those who like proper seaside sauce, Sass Tetzlaff has a twelve by six saucy ‘Stitched Kitsch’ on the left wall. These works by Tetzlaff are an absolute delight, though I’ll bet that if the artist was male it would be seen differently by some.

 I recommend a view asap.
