Knock Knock: Seven Artists in Hastings
Jerwood Art Gallery, Rock A Nore, Hastings.
2 February 2013 – 17 April 2013.
The Jerwood Gallery has announced its forthcoming show Knock Knock: Seven Artists in Hastings, which opens on 2 February 2013 and runs until 17 April 2013. Also, the exhibition opens alongside a new hang of the Jerwood Gallery’s permanent collection rooms. Approximately one third of the Jerwood Collection was exhibited when the gallery opened in March 2012 and the re-hang will give the opportunity to showcase works, previously unseen, from the collection.
Hot reporter Joe Fearn is looking forward to seeing the new works from the Jerwood collection, and he also plans to go along to review Knock Knock; the exhibition of work by contemporary and internationally recognised artists with a close association to Hastings.
The exhibition showcases seven artists: Fiona Banner, Becky Beasley, Professor Stephen Buckley, Jane Hilton, Martin Maloney, Alessandro Raho and Mario Rossi. All of the artists operate internationally and have strong affiliations to Hastings, either living, working or playing in the vicinity. Becky Beasley has previously exhibited at The Lido Art Gallery in West St. Leonards, and Mario Rossi was the first artist to show at F-ish Art Gallery in Robertson Street.
Knock Knock, curated by artist, Professor Gerard Hemsworth, explores the variety and hugely different approach of these artists to their subject matter. Hemsworth explains his concept behind bringing the works of these artists together:
What is common in the works is a curious absurdity and a delightful awkwardness, where the artists manipulate both the language and concepts they employ. . . The viewer is invited to go beyond their expectations and address the complexity of these works, which are both disconcerting and haunting.
Liz Gilmore, Director of the Jerwood Gallery says:
Hastings and the wider locality has a long history of being a creative magnet and catalyst for artists, many of whom like John Bratby RA (1928–1992) and Edward Burra (1895-1976) are represented in our collection. The town continues to be a vital source of inspiration for artists today.
Jerwood Gallery came to Hastings, in part because of its strong artistic tradition and profile. This show celebrates the town’s cultural richness, offering an internationally significant and ambitious show, which has potential to challenge, surprise and delight us all.

Film by Project Art Works
In early 2012, the Project Art Works artists and collaborators visited the Jerwood Gallery in the final week of its construction. Over the course of a bright winter’s day, six Tuesday Studios consultants, all of whom are highly sensitive to the sounds, surfaces, light and qualities of built space, made a raw experiential investigation and documentation of the building. The investigation was recorded through sound and video. To mark the first anniversary of the gallery another survey visit is planned by the group and the resulting film-sound work will be shown as part of Knock, Knock.

William Scott: Divided Figure
27 April – 10 July 2013
2013 marks the centenary of the birth of William Scott (1913-1989), one of the leading British painters of his generation. William Scott: Divided Figure, investigates Scott’s works over two decades, from 1954-1973. Developed in conjunction with the William Scott Archive, the show has a particular focus on Scott’s early figure works, rarely seen in the public domain and made possible by generous loans from private collectors.
