New OB Collective

Dawn Dublin and Erika Holland have left The Observer Building (OB)… and the reins have now been handed over to The OB Collective. Catching sight of posters around town, the team appear to have lots of  inspiring creative ideas – and have been working hard to transform the space, making their vision a reality. Zelly Restorick asks John Knowles about the plans to make The OB a hub for community theatre, cinema and arts.

Making Peace

Soka Gakkai International (SGI) have organised a meeting entitled ‘Making Peace’ to be held at Sussex South Coast College on 14 April 2016. A talk will be given by Robert Harrap, general director of SGI-UK starting at 7.30 pm. Zelly Restorick asks Mark Bishop about the talk and SGI.

Hastings council to vote on ditching investments in oil, gas and coal

Local residents will be joined by campaigners from further afield in East Sussex on Wednesday 13 April, for Hastings Borough Council’s historic vote on divestment from fossil fuels (coal, oil and gas). Locally, the Labour Party is in favour of divestment, but the test will be how many Tories choose to support the motion.

Free bookshop raises funds for charity

A dynamic group of volunteers has taken over an empty shop in Devonshire Road, Bexhill, and filled it with free books to encourage people to enjoy reading and raise funds for local charity, Hastings Furniture Service (HFS). Chief executive Naomi Ridley writes.

Why Hastings is still Mugsborough

Michael Madden is a stalwart supporter of the Labour Party, but not of the ruling Labour group on Hastings Borough Council. In fact he was recently expelled from the local Labour Party. Here he details his serious falling-out with his former party colleagues over the council’s attitude towards planning, and in particular its actions in the Country Park, and compares HBC with the council described in Robert Tressell’s fictional town of Mugsborough, a thinly disguised portrait of Hastings in the Edwardian era.
