Hunting for herbs
Transition Town Hastings have once again joined (non-violent!) forces with local resident, Ben Fairlight Edwards, The Barefoot Herbalist, to organise a foraging herbal walk.
Ben writes: “I checked out this walk yesterday. In the first 200 metres, there are at least 30 species of plants, 20 of which are useful as safe foods & medicines – the other 10 being lovely plants (including the quite rare Small Cow-wheat with its two-tone yellow flowers).
“It’s lovely walking into Combe Valley Countryside Park from this end, with beautiful views once you’re across the railway line.
“Bring a picnic, maybe something to sit on, weather clothing, etc.
“Hope to see you there. Adults £10 (pay when you arrive). Chidren FREEEEEEEEE!”
Thoughtful foraging
Very important, according to Ben, only to take small amounts of any plant and to forage carefully and mindfully, so that the plants continue to grow and be available to everyone, including non-human varieties! Alternatively, you can learn about the herbs and then grow them from seed in your garden space, if you’re lucky enough to have one.
Herbal Walk with Ben Fairlight Edwards, The Barefoot Herbalist: Sunday 4 October, 10am-2pm, starting at the entrance to the fishing pond on Crowhurst Rd/Queensway. Park on verges or at bottom of Robsack Rd (there’s Public Footpath access).
