Drawing Life wants your votes!

It’s voting time for the Aviva community grants and Drawing Life has been quick out of the blocks to call for HOT readers’ votes. Nick Terdre reports.

Drawing Life brings life drawing classes to people living with dementia in Hastings, St Leonards and Ore.

“Life drawing brings as much joy to caregivers as it does to participants, and it offers a visual and dynamic challenge that encourages people to express themselves, however primitively, to release some inner sense of self, and mark their still relevant place in the world,” says author and artist, Judy Parkinson, who helped launch the initiative.

“Our classes help to decrease anxiety, increase empathy and create new ways for families and caregivers to connect with loved ones.

“We are collaborating with Jerwood Gallery where we hold classes, and we have exhibited drawings in care homes and at Hastings Arts Forum with extremely positive feedback from visitors of all ages and backgrounds.

“Your vote could help Drawing Life to win a grant of up to £25,000 for us to build on our achievements by holding regular classes, for more people, more frequently, in more places. Please vote for Drawing Life!”

You can find out more about Aviva’s community grants competition, which is held annually, and register to vote here.

Everyone gets 10 votes which can be given to one or a number of projects. These are grouped into four categories: Health and Wellbeing, Skills for Life, Community Support and Inclusivity. Voting closes at midday on 21 November.

Other projects in the Hastings area have been entered by National Childbirth Trust, 3rd Hastings Brownies, Hastings Sport CIC, Bexleigh, Hythe and Abbey Residents’ Association, Emmaus Hastings, Bexhill Amateur Boxing Club, Homecall, Beulah Baptist Church, 1066 Specials Football Club, Bexhill Cricket Club and Sedlescombe School PTA.
