Andy White: politics again… you know why
Belfast singer-songwriter Andy White is writing songs about politics again. You know why. Andy White is a 21st Century Troubadour. From the “electrifying urgency” (FRoots) of first single, Religious Persuasion to his latest LP-only album The Guilty & The Innocent, Andy’s a vital and engaging performer and his rare appearances in the UK are not to be missed.
Collaborating with the likes of Tim Finn and Liam O Maonlai (as ALT), writing with Peter Gabriel, recording with Sinead O’Connor and touring with Van Morrison, Andy has had a stellar career in music while still keeping a firm grip on his “have guitar, will travel” folksinger ethos. The Guilty & The Innocent is available through Proper, along with latest CD release, Imaginary Lovers.
Influenced both by touring his career retrospective box set last year -released on the 30th anniversary of hard-hitting debut, Rave On – and throwing things at the telly in response to what’s going on in the world, Andy has written and recorded ten very powerful songs.
Side One is The Guilty; Side Two, The Innocent. Agree with it or not, it’s a powerful piece of work. Songs about Trump, Jeremy, Grenfell, Manchester, refugees, Belfast. Trump again. The unheard. The album rocks like a Neil Young album – and some of it is solo acoustic, the way he’ll be touring in the UK.
Andy states “The Guilty & the Innocent is one half of a double album based on the two themes of Love and Politics. But the time for these songs to be heard is now. In these times, we all have to do what we can—and this is what I can do”.
Brilliant video! If You Want It by Andy White:
If You Want It was written with Allison Russell (Po’ Girl, The Birds Of Chicago), who shares lead vocals with Andy and features Paul Rigby on pedal steel, Radoslav Lorkovic on piano and Hammond, and John Raham on drums, who also engineered in Vancouver, Canada.
Andy claims this video clip was the only way he could be sure that everyone got the words of the song, but then he didn’t reckon on his ‘artistic-yet-as-clear-as-a-doctor’s’ handwriting!
