JJ Waller’s weekend highlights

Lately, Brighton-based photographer JJ Waller seems to be spending more time in St Leonards-on -Sea than his home town. He was back this weekend photographing street artist Stern Rockwell as he worked on a mammoth-sized but delicate illustration of a conga drummer in South Street. Stern is a Brooklyn-born Hong Konger who is used to painting the sides of sky scrapers. St Leonards is obviously going up in the world…

Hastings Beatles Day is run in aid of charity and is a day for many musicians to share their appreciation of the pop band. This year there are 96 bands over four stages playing Beatles songs.

A sunny Easter holiday for once

It’s rare to have a sunny Easter holiday period, and after the wild winds on Thursday night, the weather didn’t look promising, but spring blossomed at the perfect time for ATownExploresABook’s Railway Children event on Saturday in Kings Road and there was even an opportunity to bask in the sun with a young seal. Max Baillie and Suntou Susso

Kora master meets violin virtuoso

Coinciding with the release of his debut album Kanéfonyo (Never Give Up) Gambian kora player Suntou Susso is touring the UK this year in various (mostly folk-oriented) venues. One of the earliest of his shows was a concert in St John’s Church, St Leonards on 26 March, where an enthusiastic audience listened in awe to the extraordinary sounds Susso could conjure from this instrument. Victoria Kingham praises this remarkable kora maestro who is coming back to play in St Leonards at the end of April.
