Life in lockdown

With our lives completely upended due to the pandemic, I wanted to take a closer look at the varying experiences within our town of Hastings. This is intended only to be a snapshot, into the lives of the people who were willing to share their unique perspective and experience during all three lockdowns. You will read about people who work in the NHS, who have gotten married, have families, or run a charity. It is important to remember that we are in fact living through an historical moment and it’s our lived experiences that shape what this period in time means. Written by HOT’s Vanessa Alves.

Hastings to show support for Anti-Racism Day

Hastings is set to join the rest of the globe in marking the United Nations Anti-Racism day this Saturday March 2o. The day was previewed back on March 2 with an online talk featuring a host of local and national speakers. Local group Hastings Stand Up to Racism issued the following press release detailing how Hastings will be taking part in this global stand against racism and fascism.

Wording of some census questions causes controversy

As Census Day approaches on Sunday 21 March, the Office for National Statistics has found itself in the dock, literally and figuratively, on the controversial wording of some of the questions in this year’s survey. Nick Terdre reports.

Queen’s Arcade under sudden threat

The charity that owns the town centre Queen’s Arcade as an asset to benefit local people is about to auction it off very soon and suddenly.  Bernard McGinley wonders why, and took the pictures.

Rabbit hutches for White Rock

What did the Conservation Officer of Hastings Borough Council (HBC) say about a high new building in a conservation area?  Nothing.  The Planning Committee?  Nothing.  As the new development takes shape at the old White Rock Post Office, Bernard McGinley, who also took the photos, looks at a decided case.
