Award-winning playwright, actor and singer and Irish dance teacher, Maria McAteer, moved to Hastings a couple of years ago, and has already thrown herself wholeheartedly into the cultural life of the community. Following on from the success of her last touring show, My Friend Lester, which she also brought to Hastings, her latest play, One Last Look, is due to open in April, inspired by Hastings and St Leonards. HOT’s Zelly Restorick asks her about her latest work, her extraordinary creative drive and her experience of Hastings.

At the January Hastings Debates, Clare Moseley, founder of Care4Calais, spoke about the current desperate situation on the ground for refugees in Calais. Professor Sue Clayton (Goldsmiths University) concluded the talk with an introduction to her award winning investigative film Calais Children: A Case To Answer. An exciting new event showcasing local women in music, all proceeds of which will support Child.org, an international development charity focused on helping mothers and children in Africa, is being launched on Friday 20 April at Blackmarket in Hastings Old Town. The Electric Palace, the independent cinema in the heart of Hastings Old Town has joined forces with East Sussex charity, Care for the Carers and local arts organisation, Project Art Works to create a special double bill film event, featuring the new film, DINA alongside short film, THE MASK on Sunday 1 April at 8pm.
‘One You’ is a national campaign designed to ‘help people who are overweight or obese’, which is an issue that affects 57% of adults in East Sussex. One You East Sussex is making available free resources to East Sussex residents to raise awareness around calorie consumption. Zelly Restorick writes.
