As part of the Hastings Storytelling Festival, A Heart At Sea is performed by Half A String, a collaboration between folk singer/songwriter, Avi Simmons and puppet maker and artist, Peter Morton. Following a tragedy, a young boy bottles up his heart and throws it into the sea. Intricate puppets are swept through a transforming wooden world as the hero tries to recover his heart. Local author, Tom Blass, will be reading from his latest book The Naked Shore of the North Sea. With a background in anthropology, law and and political geography, Tom Blass works as a journalist and editor specialising in issues relating to business, law, human rights and foreign policy. Hastings Pier has been awarded the Royal Institute of British Architecture’s prestigious Stirling prize, the latest in a long line of awards. Despite widespread recognition, however, the pier is having a tough time finding a sustainable financial model. Now a new business plan has been prepared which will shortly be presented to stakeholders. Nick Terdre reports.
Local film-maker, musician and festival organiser Keith Rodway has been asked by the Citizens Advice Bureau to organise a benefit CD for their office in Hastings, Citizens Advice 1066, highlighting the amazingly diverse music scene here in Hastings and St Leonards and at the same time, supporting a charity who provide an incredibly valuable service to the local community, especially helping the more marginalised and disadvantaged individuals and families to keep their heads above the water. Fuel poverty, a major issue in Hastings and St Leonards-on-Sea, means paying fuel bills results in a state of poverty. Reducing fuel poverty, lowering fuel bills, helping people to keep warm and spreading the word about energy efficiency methods are all within the remit of SHINE (Sustainable Houses In Inclusive Neighbourhoods), which launched on 26 October at Christ Church Hall in St Leonards.
