Public Consultation opens on Stade plans
The trustees of the Hastings and St Leonards Foreshore Trust have launched a Public Consultation on proposals arising from the Jerwood development. This may seem minor and technical compared with the drama and passion generated by the Art Gallery, but it’s all about the space around it which will become the location for many events and hopefully will be a daily hang-out and social scene.
The consultation includes changes to provide a community centre and new public lavatories, and the design of the open space itself. It also involves the transfer of part of Pelham Place car park from Council ownership to the Trust in exchange for a small parcel of Trust land on the Stade. Whether this might bring a softening of the draconian HBC parking policy at Pelham (e.g. evening charges targeted at St Mary in the Castle’s audiences, and disabled bays sited nowhere near the pedestrian crossing) remains to be seen.
Comments must be in by 16 February and No, it’s not an invitation to have another go at the Jerwood Gallery or to dream up new locations for it on the Pier, the old Ice Rink, the Archery Ground or Timbuctou.
The full consultation document is available on HBC’s website.
