Volunteer working in EFT’s Secret Garden.

Calling all keen gardeners in Hastings and beyond!

Simone Brookes of the Education Futures Trust has an appeal for all keen gardeners in Hastings and its environs to help build its Secret Garden project.

Can you spare any native flowers, plants or shrubs for Education Futures Trust’s Secret Garden project at The Firs?

If so, Hastings-based support charity EFT would love to hear from you.

Teams of volunteers have been busy developing land at our Elphinstone Road site which will be used as a nature activity garden for children and families to enjoy. The soil is currently being prepared and the area will soon be ready for planting.

Secret Garden The Firs 350As part of the Secret Garden project, EFT is looking to establish a wildflower meadow, to attract butterflies and bees, and a sensory trail with herbs, alliums, grasses and lamb’s ear ideal for enhancing smell, sight, touch and sound.

In addition, a newly created woodland cove will be ideal for bluebells, primrose and small trees, with flowers such as forget-me-not, oxeye daisy, honeysuckle and wild roses most welcome for the native beds.

The charity would also be very grateful for any trellis, garden tools, water barrels and compost to aid the Secret Garden project team.

We hope to have the Secret Garden up and running by the summer, when it will be open for specific local community events and as an activity centre for children.
