Amber Rudd invites Hastings to share her aims
In her most recent newsletter, Amber Rudd, the Conservative MP for Hastings and Rye, has outlined three items on her agenda for Hastings. HOT’s Chris Cormack reports on this and invites the other party candidates to send HOT three items on their agenda.
Unemployment in Hastings and Rye fell by 20% last year, says Amber Rudd. This year, Amber Rudd says she will be working hard to achieve further falls. One of the levers to achieve this is to make sure Hastings is on the Assisted Area Map. Amber is securing this by lobbying the Minister for Business and Enterprise, Michael Fallon MP, with a view to giving Hastings access to more investment. Hastings is included on the draft – and Amber invites you to give your support by signing her petition to make sure Hastings is on the final map.
As Hastings gets more jobs, Amber supports raising the minimum wage from £6.31 to £7.00, which it is hoped the Low Pay Commission will confirm when they report. Amber wants people to earn more money for their work, and of course, with lower taxes, to keep more in their pocket!
Petition For Free Parking
Amber is also launching a brand new petition calling on the Council to install exit barriers at all its own car parks and introduce at least 30 minutes free parking on a permanent basis. Amber thinks that affordable parking is such an important issue for shoppers – along with some time for free, but in her opinion it will also give a much needed boost for Hastings’ shops, alongside ultimately increasing the Council’s Tax revenues.
Amber invites people to support small businesses by reading the Facebook page and clicking on the link to her new Free Parking petition.
Chris Cormack has invited the prospective parliamentary candidates of the other main parties to send HOT an account of what three main items they put on their agenda for Hastings.

Excellent point Andrea. This smacks of our MP jumping on a populist bandwagon that has not been thought through properly. A ridiculous idea. Perhaps she should concentrate on improvements to bus services in the town, and a Park and Ride scheme instead of this nonsense.
It’s on a par with her hair brained idea that the HS1 will be extended from Ashford to Hastings. Now I will eat my hat if that happens (and gladly)!!

Why free parking? That will only encourage more people to drive into Hastings, which is already jam packed with cars. I’m all in favour of encouraging people to shop in hastings, but why by car? Why not some kind of discounted train/bus ticket scheme? If HBC can afford to subsidise parking (and I don’t think they can, or should) then they should also subsidise those who come by public transport and don’t clog up the town centre and pollute the air with their cars.
