The future of energy storage

If Britain is to reach its energy targets for 2020 and meet the energy challenges that lie ahead of us, flexibility is essential, along with innovative technology and efficient energy systems, according to Jonathan Radcliffe of the Birmingham Energy Institute. Increased battery storage will play a vital role in this strategy.  Zelly Restorick asks Dudley Moor-Radford, managing director of Moixa, some questions about its battery storage innovations.

Moixa is an energy storage battery company whose factory has been based in Hastings for the past four years.

Tell us about Moixa and its area of speciality? Your USP?

Moixa is the only British designed domestic storage battery on the market. It stores energy from solar panels and enables households to access free electricity at night.

How will your products change people’s energy usage? I understand they permit collection and storage of electricity both from solar panels and off-peak from the grid.

We have 1,000 households now enjoying free electricity. We are not changing household consumption, simply making more of that consumption free. In addition to charging from the sun, customers can also charge overnight if they have Economy 7. We are the only battery manufacturer who offers solar plus battery bundles. Most of what we install is for households new to solar.

Can people sell this electricity back to the grid?

Our Gridshare platform is the unique bit to Moixa. If you sign up to Gridshare and you have spare energy, then we can sell this back to the grid and commit to paying you a minimum of £50 for the first 3 years. By signing up to Gridshare, you also receive a lifetime warranty on the battery.

Are your storage batteries available to both residents and businesses?

Moixa batteries can be stacked and we have some installed with small businesses, but our primary market is domestic households.

Will people who use your batteries save money on their electricity bill?

Yes, although the key question is: how much? Those who make the most savings are typically larger users of electricity at night and in the morning, so we have a lot of working families with children who are enjoying around £400 benefit per year based on a combination of energy savings, Gridshare and solar feed-in tariff. The MYMoixa App gives a live snapshot of battery change status and daily savings.

How will this contribute towards a better environment?

The carbon element is clear, but difficult to define. Unless households are on 100% green energy tariff, then our customers are less reliant on polluting generators like gas and coal.
