The Leigh Dyer Award for Best Film

The Leigh Dyer Award for Best Film

Trash Cannes 5 Day Film Challenge

A real highlight this month is Trash’d New Wave Festival’s event coming up at Kino-Teatr: The Trash Cannes 5 Day Film Challenge Gala Award Show. Adrienne Hunter writes.

As Part of The Trash’d New Wave Festival 2016, Trash Cannes will be showing all eighteen completed films in this year’s contest and awarding prizes to those considered by the panel of judges to be the best in each of the 8 categories.

This year, the judges are:

Rebecca Marshall, film-maker and co-founder of The Electric Palace Cinema and Shot By The Sea, Hastings’ Annual Festival of Film and Moving Image, Hastings;

Lee Cornes, television writer, actor and stand-up comedian and one of only two actors outside the core Blackadder cast to have appeared in 3 of the legendary show’s seasons;

Archie Laughlan, BAFTA-winning documentary film-maker renowned for his nine-years-in-the-making documentary about Hastings Pier, Re: A Pier;

Trix Worrell, the most successful black television writer of his generation, best-known for his work on For Queen and Country (1988), Desmond, (1989) and as writer, director and composer for What You Lookin’ At (1993);

Keith Rodway, musician and film-maker whose documentary, Becoming Penny was screened at Trash Cannes in 2012 and his narrative short, The Mariner’s Tale was screened at Trash Cannes in 2014, and who is Creative Director of Trash Cannes and Trash’d New Wave Festivals.

The judges will have no knowledge of the films prior to a private screening, where they will assess the films and assign awards to them in 8 categories: Best Film (The Leigh Dyer Award), Best Screenplay, Best Soundtrack, Best Actor, Best Use of Prop, Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography and Best Special Effects (The Trevor Award).

trashThe winner of Best Film will be presented with the Leigh Dyer Award, which is inscribed with the previous years’ winners’ names – and is the winner’s to keep for the coming year, until the next Film Challenge in 2017, when it will pass on to the next winner. The award ceremony will take place at the Kino Teatr with special projections by visual effects artist, Adam Seeley being shown inside the foyer, some of which will be visible from outside the venue. It’s going to be brilliant!
