Creative ways to make ends meet
Drew Copus is a Hastings lad and one of our better known graffiti artists. Amongst other things, he was commissioned to paint the octopus on the roof of the chip shed on St Leonards’ seafront. He’s good, and he often gets commissions, but sadly, not often enough to keep the wolf from the door. Erica Smith finds out more about Drew’s latest venture.
In a desperate drive to pay this month’s rent, Drew has set up a Facebook page which he hopes will find him – and other artists close to the breadline – paid work.
“Odd Jobs for Hastings’ Artists” was born. Drew hopes that it will be a forum where people can post to show what kinds of work they are happy to take on, and people will also post if they are looking for an artist to take on a piece of work with a creative twist. It’s a kind of local labour exchange for the gig economy. There is obviously a need for the group because, in less than a week, there are already over 150 members.
Feeling optimistic
Drew is surprised and delighted at the instant response to his idea. “Obviously the group has a long way to go to make it a viable resource, however I’m feeling optimistic that with continued use and support we can make it a great network for all those using its services.”
Whilst the group is obviously supplying a need for the local creative community, it also highlights that this town, famous for its high proportion of artists, is not an easy place to survive on art alone.
Creative industries
The group raises questions about the health of the local creative industries and whether artists should be focusing on making a living from their chosen creative path or becoming jacks of all trades.
Whether you are a starving artist or a rich philanthropist, you can join the Odd jobs for Hastings’ artists Facebook group here.
And you can see samples of Drew’s professional artwork here.
