Memorial event for Jeremy Birch in June
A memorial event for the late Jeremy Birch will take place on the evening of Saturday 20 June in Warrior Square, Hastings Borough Council has announced. While details are still being finalised, it is likely that the event will start around 8pm and finish, hopefully with a firework display, around 10pm.
It had originally been intended to hold this memorial event at St Mary in the Castle, but it soon became clear that this was going to be too small for the number of people expected to attend, said Kevin Boorman, head of communications and marketing. Rather than restrict the number of people attending, which no-one wanted to do, an open-air venue has been chosen which will accommodate everybody.
Jeremy died on 6 May following a severe stroke. He was leader of Hastings Borough Council and represented the Central St Leonards ward on the local council and Old Hastings and Tressell on the county council.
A book of condolence has been opened at the Community Contact Centre in the Town Hall and messages can also be sent via the HBC website.

Jeremy always seemed to be at every event I attended. A truly committed man, full of personal and political integrity. My heart felt condolences to his family. Such a sad loss for Hastings and St Leonard’s.

We had our differences, but no-one could fault Jeremy’s commitment and conscientiousness. Only recently, he dealt efficiently with an issue I had in Central St Leonards ward. A sad loss.
