The end of the pier show!

On Monday 18 November, Piertown Hastings announced that their Piertown project must draw to a close just days before the planned opening of the ice rink and Christmas market. Dee Williams investigates.

With just four days notice Piertown released the following statement on Facebook.

“It is with a very heavy heart and great reluctance that we have to announce the time has come to draw the Piertown project on Hastings Pier to a close.
We’ve had an amazing time, with equal measure of highs, lows, laughter, sweat and tears. Our aim from the beginning was always to give a nod to the past, and rekindle the musical heritage of the pier, with bigger and better shows planned for each year. Sadly, It wasn’t meant to be for us.The overhead costs involved with attempting this project on the Pier have became too onerous and too costly to continue any longer.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank everybody for the amazing support over the past two years. Also thanks to all the external promoters that brought some great events to the Pier during our time. Some particular highlights for us being: The Euros Final, Annie Mac, The Brand New Heavies, Sasha, Reggae On The Pier, Andy C, Cafe Mambo, Garage Nation and not to forget Kevin & Perry for the kids.Ice Rink & Christmas
This also unfortunately means cancellation of the Ice Rink & Christmas Markets that were planned to open on Friday 22 November. All ticket holders will be contacted by Skiddle and will receive a full refund. Please accept our sincere apologies for any inconvenience this may have caused.Thank You again for all your support.
PIERTOWN X”

Their Facebook announcement was quickly followed by over 200 comments. Some of which congratulated the Piertown directors on a job well done, while others thought the closure inevitable given the poor management of events since they took over in June 2023.

My own experience of a Piertown event was not a happy one. I was unfortunate enough to attend the look-a-like event on 25th August 2024. The security teams, under the half-blind eye of Damien Fell, treated the public to the kind of high security search metered out to prisoners of Alcatraz. The confiscated goods included diabetic’s biscuits, children’s sweets and the milk from babies bottles.

Once inside the event the participants found themselves kettled by security guards working for the SS – Sussex Security and Samurai Security. No-one was allowed to move their car, fetch their chairs or heaven forbid bring contraband food into the venue. Those who spoke out against such aggressive tactics were simply man-handled from the event.  I myself was physically removed by a bevvy of security guards for trying to take a photograph of the Head of Security for a story I planned to write.

If you treat paying customers with such disregard, then don’t expect them to come back.  My complaint of unlawful assault to Hastings Police is still languishing in the ‘to do’ tray of my civilian investigator who has yet to secure any body cam footage nearly three months on.

If the recent Telegraph journalist case tells us anything, it’s that the UK police have their hands full investigating ‘hurty words’ on historic social media posts.

Following my horrendous experience I have no time for the Piertown event organisers but I can understand the disappointment of those who thought that the pier was finally delivering and now see it as just another Owens debacle.

I walked past the end of the pier last week and saw no preparations for the highly promoted ice rink and Christmas market.  Was it ever a going concern?  It would appear that tickets have been on sale right up to the announcement yet the Hastings Ice Rink organisers knew that the event couldn’t go ahead a week before when they put this message out on Facebook.

Hastings Christmas Ice Rink
Unfortunately the council fun police have stopped us from going ahead this year. Sorry guys, we tried but it’s just not worth going up against the powers that be. Maybe next year.

The blame is firmly on the shoulders of the council, but according to Steve Wilkins, a previous organiser of events on the pier, the ice rink was never a viable project in the first place.

Steve Wilkins
Hastings Christmas Ice Rink the council only stopped it because the pier can’t hold the weight of an ice rink. It was never going to happen as it’s been looked at before and vetoed. Now do the decent thing and let people know officially and give them their money back.

This rather suggests that Piertown never received the green light for this project, yet went ahead anyway, selling tickets and raising expectations. Although full refunds are promised from ticket agents Skiddle, one Facebook commentator stated that booking fees have been withheld.

Leanne Hook
Piertown Hastings States a full refund but l’ve only got £12 back from £14.75 cost and ibooked 2slots so lost £5.50!! This totally unfair.

The writing was on the wall for Piertown when the two directors signed to have Hastings Pier Events Ltd struck off the register on 7th and 8th of November. Yet the ticket sales continued.

It would seem that the Piertown team had big dreams which for far too many people, myself included, turned into nothing but a nightmare.

I’m gonna have one unhappy little girl on her birthday now as a she was so looking forward to going ice skating.

Yes the Allison Pearson part did rather distract but I think it brings up another interesting talking point which is, do we only agree to protect freedom of speech when we agree with those who are speaking? Hmmmm.

Good article, weakened by the unnecessary mention of the Daily Telegraph’s culture wars articles about their columnist Alison Pearson.

There is a lack of oversight when it comes to the pier. One body sub-lets to another body and down the chain it goes. Then they all blame each other when things go wrong and it is impossible for the public to make a complaint.

Hastings council are the real problem here – their incompetence is truly terrifying. They let Abid Gulzar take over the Pier. In my opinion he is a greedy tyrant who should be investigated for corruption

There are a lot of people taking a cut in this set up. The owner takes a cut and sublets to the events team. Then Skiddle take a cut to sell the tickets. Then the events team take a cut and so do the security teams employed. When you have a complaint it is difficult to know who to complain to.

don’t forget the gentleman at the top of the ‘ponzi pier pyramid’ … one Mr.Abid Gulzar … those he has sub leased to appear to have zero chance of ‘making it pay’ if one believes the rental charged …

Not clear on that. It very much looks like he has passed events down the line. Not a good look though to cancel at the last minute.
