Walking into the Jerwood Foreshore Gallery there is an art work exploding out of the wall, stopping HOT’s Lauris Morgan-Griffiths in her tracks. It is the work of artist Gus Cummins. An inhabitant of Hastings for the past forty years; a Royal Academician and an artist who happens to be local – distinct from a local artist.
The innovative Project Art Works is UK’s leading artist led organisation that works with people with profound intellectual impairment and complex needs. It was started 21 years ago. In Hastings. Since then it has inspired similar schemes across the country – with international links. Isn’t Hastings amazing? It is staggering what Hastings achieves with limited resources and massive enthusiasm and ambition. HOT’s Lauris Morgan-Griffiths applauds Project Art Works’ hard work.

At a recent meeting in Hastings, St Leonards resident, Leah Levane, provided an eyewitness account of life in the occupied Palestinian territories. Those attending heard of her experience of being part of the largest ever all Jewish delegation to visit the occupied territories. Leah was one of 130 Jewish people, mainly from the US, who visited Hebron in May of last year. One of their aims was to restore a Palestinian family to the home they were evicted from 20 years ago. This Tuesday morning on the way to work, I heard our MP, Amber Rudd, on the Today programme talk about the Suffragettes and how important it was that women campaigned so hard to get the vote. She fought shy of agreeing that those women who had undergone prison sentences for their actions should be pardoned, but she supported the Votes for Women activists who lobbied for something that they believed was important for a fair and democratic society.
