Some people don’t like the seagulls and insist there should be a gull cull – but let’s face it – the gulls were here long before we filled the place up with our rubbish in thin-skinned bin bags. Gulls have always been scavengers, it’s just a shame that our human detritus and left-over junk food is more of a lure for them than the fish heads on the beach. On Wednesday 29 February at Hastings Magistrates Court, a local peace activist who recently returned from a trip to Afghanistan was sentenced to 13 days in prison for her role in an anti-war protest back in 2009. While many of us loudly celebrated Preservation Sunday on 19 February, over 5,000 residents of Hastings & St Leonards quietly marked the seventh anniversary of their remarkable group, Hastings Freecycle. To find out more about the group Richard Hull spoke to seven of its members and its two hard-working and unpaid administrators Sara Lee and Gayle Valentine.
Charity for Kids, Hastings’ newly established registered charity, is ready for every challenge in its drive to provide for the disadvantaged and poorly children in the Hastings area. So much so that they have started training for one of the ultimate endurance tests, swimming the English Channel – and back – in a 2-way relay, writes Graham Hodgson.
