See the Olympics and Paralympics for free at the Post Office Tearooms
HOT journalist Erica Smith professes no interest in the Olympics OR knitting, but when Philip Bray from the Post Office Tea Rooms told her about the knitted Olympics in the window, she was down like a shot to see more!
The Post Office Tea Rooms in Marine Court on
St Leonards seafront has always had innovative window displays. Six months ago, co-owner David Wishingsky started a knitting group which meets weekly on a Thursday evening. One of the members suggested collaborating on a special window display for the Olympics, and lo and behold, the St Leonards Olympic display was delivered on-time and under-budget!
The window display includes a diver, synchronised swimmers, a very agile gymnast, beach volleyball, a martial art display, three proud athletes standing on the winning podiums, and so much more!
The Olympic display will run throughout the games, and afterwards the athletes will be adapted in order to compete in the Paralympics. A wheelchair is being knitted as I write this article!
I asked Philip what the plans are for the Christmas window, and the twinkle in his eye suggested that he has very exciting plans, but, like Danny Boyle’s opening show, he’s keeping the details a secret.
Philip says that he and David are always willing to hear proposals for the Tea Rooms’ windows. The window will be used to show i-Pad works by Debi Angel during Coastal Currents, and for the Photo Biennial in October, but there is potential for some other displays before the Christmas extravaganza is installed. So, if you have an idea, pop along to see whether they think it’s a winner. Items sold from the window displays carry 0% commission.
The knitting group meets every Thursday between 6.30 and 8.30. There is a charge of £3.50 per session which covers the cost of tea or coffee and homemade cake.
