Kate Tym and John Knowles

The Penny Pincher’s Christmas

With Christmas coming and the usual plethora of c-list celeb pantos on offer, two local actors decide to break the mould, John Knowles explains why.

Kate Tym and myself are no strangers to the local performing scene with a track record in drama and comedy for adult audiences, but this year we have put pen to paper for a family friendly outing of ‘A Christmas Carol’.

I love this play, it’s my favourite Christmas story and when my kids were young, I used to tell them the story, doing all the voices and characters – and now they are grown ups, I miss it.

Dickens’ well loved story has got everything: comedy, pathos, love and of course, redemption: it’s the perfect seasonal play. So this year Kate and I decided to take that idea and do the whole of ‘A Christmas Carol’ with just two actors. What follows is a zany hour of fun but without ever losing sight of the original story.

We’re really lucky as well, as we will be using the newly revamped Palace function room, which has heavy overtones of a Victorian drawing room, but with hi-tech sound, lighting and even smoke!

The one thing we wanted was to give a cheaper offering to local families without compromising on the quality of the experience. With only 40 seats this will be an intimate experience, including all the usual ‘Behind you’s’, ‘Oh no we don’t’s’ as well as some dancing and a lot of on-stage confusion. Whatever it will be, we promise you that it won’t be like any other performance of ‘A Christmas Carol’ that you’ve seen before.
