Cat and Barbara at Zoom Arts gallery

Cat Pavek and Barbara Williams are holding a joint exhibition at Zoom Arts Warrior Square station gallery starting on Monday 3 April. Zoom Arts explains their collaboration.

The exhibition is entitled Janx – From Shelf To Gutter. The word janx is urban slang for stuff, things, junk. Cat Pavek normally investigates space in her work, and for this exhibition she’s using a camera to take photographs of the interiors of superstores, displaying them in a distinctive format.

Barbara Williams follows some of the products after they have left the shop, She collects crushed cans from local kerbsides and experiments with how they may interact with other materials, including printing them under the wheels of a car.

Cat’s work for the exhibition is photographic-based. She has a BA in fine art and will be going on to do a Masters in fine art. She has also studied at the New York Studio School. London-born, she now lives in Hastings, and has exhibited extensively around both towns.

“Drawing is the focus of all my work, which mainly explores themes around place and space,” Cat says. “For example, I might follow a line through a landscape or a line that travels over the human form; perhaps I will explore space through geometric drawing.”

Ideas gain momentum

“Ideas often gain momentum and branch out into other mediums like sculpture, photography or experiments with colour.

“All projects are an attempt to understand the world around me and to open up questions about what drawing is and does.

Barbara’s work for this exhibition is mainly print, although her practice includes a range of media, frequently incorporating psychological themes. She exhibits regularly in and around the Hastings area, and sometimes further afield.

She too has a degree in fine art. She is a member of the De La Warr Pavilion Artists’ Crit Group and the Towner Gallery Blue Monkey group. She has supported the local grassroots arts collective Zoom Arts for several years.

Amongst other things, Barbara’s work for this show explores an interest in the process of crushing, the contrast between weight and lightness, and the idea of traces left behind.
