Children celebrating World Book Day at The Baird Primary Academy

Hastings charity gifts over 3,000 books to children in celebration of World Book Day

To celebrate World Book Day on Thursday 4 March, Hastings charity Education Futures Trust (EFT) partnered with the National Literacy Trust Hub to gift a total of 3,600 books to children in schools across Hastings. EFT issued the following press release.

The books were distributed to children to help encourage a love for reading. Education Futures Trust works with families and children across Hastings and St Leonards to assist with their learning, and this project has helped to support children with their reading.

The delivery of the brand-new World Book Day books was made possible through a partnership between EFT and the National Literacy Trust Hub in Hastings.
The Hastings Literacy Hub seeks to raise awareness of the importance of literacy and encourage reading for pleasure in the area. It has worked in partnership with Bloomsbury Publishing to distribute titles including stories such as Skysteppers by Katherine Rundell and Bad Mermaids Meet the Witches by Sibéal Pounder.

Alison Glossop, Hastings Literacy Hub Project Manager, said: “We are thrilled to be able to gift these brilliant World Book Day books to children in Hastings and St Leonards thanks to our partnerships with Education Futures Trust and Bloomsbury Publishing. We hope the books bring joy and help build a life-long love of reading in Hastings’ families.”

Speaking of the World Book Day book deliveries, Carole Dixon, Chief Executive of Education Futures Trust said: ‘We are fortunate to be working with partners to increase the opportunities for local children in Hastings. It is exciting to know that, because of this partnership, 3,600 new books are destined to be in children’s hands by World Book Day.’

The World Book Day deliveries come as part of a busy year for Education Futures Trust, who, in the past month have already given 3,120 books to children in need in Hastings, as part of the Get Hastings Reading initiative funded by the Opportunity Area.

About the National Literacy Trust

Our mission is to improve the reading, writing, speaking and listening skills of those who need it most, giving them the best possible chance of success in school, work and life. We run Literacy Hubs and campaigns in communities where low levels of literacy and social mobility are seriously impacting people’s lives. We support schools and early years settings to deliver outstanding literacy provision, and we campaign to make literacy a priority for politicians, businesses and parents.

Our research and analysis make us the leading authority on literacy and drive our interventions. Literacy is a vital element of action against poverty and our work changes children and young people’s life stories. Our new site Words for Life provides simple, fun and educational activities for children and young people aged 0-24 to support learning at home and help them feel more confident.
